Policies have been created in the event one or more centres are required to close/ delay opening due to storm or disruption in utilities such as power. If a centre is required to close or delay their opening information will be posted on our website, facebook page or phone system as soon as possible, if possible.
Storm Closure or Delayed Opening of a Centre
St. Joseph’s Children’s Centre does not close for winter storms unless the following circumstances occur:
- Halifax Regional Municipality has declared a state of emergency and have closed down all businesses
- Halifax Regional Municipality / Halifax Regional Police have pulled public transit services and are demanding people stay off the roads
If the above circumstances occur during our hours of operation, parents will be called to pick up their children from the centre.
Individual Centres may need to close due to reasons beyond their control such as power outages, loss of water or heat. In these cases parents will be called to pick up their children from the centre. If these disruptions occur before the centre is slated to open every effort will be made to inform families (local radio stations announcements (CBC, 97.5fm, C100fm, 96.5fm, 103.5fm, 101.3fm), emails, website, answering messages etc.)
Delayed Opening of a Centre: If disruptions occur or extreme weather conditions occur that delay the opening of a centre every effort will be made to inform families (local radio stations announcements (CBC, 97.5fm, C100fm, 96.5fm, 103.5fm, 101.3fm), emails, website, answering messages etc.) If you decide to keep your child home, please call the centre to notify us.
**In every situation the centres must always be within the ratio guidelines set by the Dept. of Community Services. If during a disruption adequate numbers of staff are not available, there may be delays in when we may be able to receive all children. Ratios for children are as follows: 18 months of age and older 6:1, under 18 months of age is 4:1**
School Age Program Closure Policy
If the school board closes your child’s school prior to the centre opening or at noon dismissal, the centre will provide full / part day care. If the school board closes your child’s school mid morning or mid afternoon it will be the responsibility of the school to contact all parents to pick up their children at the school.
